New Poll: New Year's Songs at Christmas

Our latest poll (over there on there right) asks the eternal question:

" Do "New Year's" songs belong on Christmas mixes?"

From the perennial favorite "Auld Lang Syne" to the romantic standard "What Are You Doing New Years Eve" to Abba's "Happy New Year", or even Death Cab For Cuties' "The New Year". Do these end of calendar tunes work in the context of your favorite Christmas mixes?

What are your favorite New Year's related songs?

Perfect Candidates Week 8

Lots more songs for the the master list. It should be pretty clear by now that I'm going to be doing this the hard way. If a song would not be out of place on a top notch Christmas compilation then it's likely to land on the candidates list. Yes, there is a certain amount of re-inventing the wheel going on here but it's just that process that makes it interesting to me.

Here's what's new this week:
  • (There's No Place Like) Home For the Holidays - Perry Como
  • Christmas Chimes - Andre Kostelanetz
  • Christmas Time All Over The World - Sammy Davis, Jr

Master Song List Update

Since I needed an excuse to postpone snow shoveling duty a few more minutes here's another pathetic attempt at pruning the list. I'd really wanted to keep the list at 100 but I'm going to have to do some side by side comparisons with a few of the duplicate songs before I'm ready to commit to relegating any to the companion discs.

Perfect Candidates Week Six

I managed to cut a whopping 10 tracks out the master Perfect Candidates List! Pathetic, I know. Today's unlucky tracks - now headed to other themed mixes - fall into two categories. Pop songs that I felt wouldn't meld well with the other songs that are shaping up to be around for the long haul and a couple of duplicates.

Christmas Is The Time To Say 'I Love You' - Billy Squier
Early Christmas Morning - Cyndi Lauper
Jingle Bells - The Organ Orchestra
Last Christmas - Pas/Cal

Little Saint Nick - The Beach Boys
Merry X-Mas Everybody - Slade
One Little Christmas Tree - Stevie Wonder
Step Into Christmas - Elton John
The Little Drummer Boy - The Longines Symphonette Society
The Man with the Bag - Vonda Shepard

Now, here are the latest additions...

Perfect Candidates Week Six :

  1. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) - Darlene Love
  2. Christmas Chopsticks--Bobby Vinton
  3. Gee Whiz, It's Christmas - Carla Thomas
  4. Happy Sleigh Ride - Ferrante And Teicher
  5. Here We Come A-Caroling - Ray Conniff Singers
  6. I Don't Intend To Spend Christmas Without You - Margo Guryan
  7. Jingle Bell Rock - Bobby Helms
  8. Jingle Bells - Glenn Miller and His Orch.
  9. Jingle Bells - Johnny Cole
  10. Kay Thompson's Jingle Bells - Andy Williams
  11. Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow! - Andre Kostelanetz
  12. Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow - Dean Martin
  13. Midnight Sleighride - Sauter-Finegan Orch.
  14. Mistletoe & Holly - Jack Jones
  15. Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree - Brenda Lee
  16. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Ralph Hunter Choir
  17. Sleigh Bells - Al Cailoa & Riz Ortolani
  18. The Merriest - June Christy
  19. Vive le vent - Ginette Reno
That's right - after agonizing over the list and culling 10 tracks I added another 19 - including 2 more versions of both Jingle Bells and Let it Snow! I am my own worst enemy.

Back in a couple/few with more candidates, hopefully another list of cuts and a new poll.

Yules of the Game - Repeats

Sorry to have been quiet recently - other stuff kept me from the computer these last few days. I'll have the next Perfect candidates post up as soon as I can manage. Until then here's a couple of fairly obvious but still important Yules of the Game...

No repeats rule (Songs)- No song should appear on a single disc more than once. This rule is both easy and hard to follow. Easy because there are so darn many great Christmas songs out there that filling 80 minutes without repeat should be a breeze - hard because there are so darn many great performances out there of the most classic Christmas songs that choosing only one version will take a bit of soul searching in some cases.

No Repeats Rule (Performers) - In theory I like this rule but in practice keeping the likes of Bing, Perry, Andy, Nat, Frank and quite a few others down to a single track per disc will be tough. However I'll try to stick to the letter of the law as long as I can.

I'll be back tonight (or maybe tomorrow) with another list of candidates plus I'll knock a few earlier candidates off the master list.

  95. What Child Is This - Julie Andrews
  96. What Will Santa Claus Say - Mark Shane Xmas All-Stars
  97. White Christmas - Bing Crosby
  98. Winter Wonderland - The Peter Wood Singers

Let's start with dear old Santa. Sure, he'll be Coming to Town but that's still eleven months away so we don't need seven versions...
  1. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town - The Goldiggers
  2. Santa Claus Is Comin' To Town - The Ralph Hunter Choir
  3. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Bing Crosby
  4. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Jimmy McGriff
  5. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - Peppermint Kandy Kids
  6. Santa Claus Is Coming To Town - The Jackson 5
  7. Santa Claus Is Coming to Town - The Partridge Family
Okay, that's four down and all i have the heart to cut now.I figure Bing's going to have at least one other tune on the mix, the bubblegum versions are terrific but maybe not perfect and the Jimmy McGriff is wonderful but a victim of the numbers. Of course theres no guarantee the three remaining tracks will make it until the end either.

Now it's Rudolph's turn...

Ever since the North Pole Cloning project was abandoned there's been no reason for more than one version of Rudy's tune on TPM.
  1. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Dean Martin
  2. Rudolph, The Red-Nosed Reindeer- The Organ Orchestra
  3. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Tex Beneke, Ray Eberle And The Modernaires
  4. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer - The Hiltonaires With The Tony Mansell Singers
The Organ Orchestra was a dark horse from the very beginning (and they still have a shot with Jungle Bells), Dean's version is top notch but I think he'll make the list with another tune.

The good news for our departing songs is that they are now all in the running for one of our theme mixes - one of which may end up being a runners-up disc.

So, from 98 to 91. Hardly a dent. I'll revisit the list in a couple of days to try and knock a few more ornaments loose.

Perfect Candidates Week 5

Here's the latest batch to make the increasingly long "short list" for TPM.

Lots of selections this week from FaLaLaLaLa.com's fine series of ADVENTure in Carols sharity compilations .

  1. Baby, It's Cold Outside - Dean Martin
  2. Christmas Is - Percy Faith
  3. Christmas Is The Best Of All - Johnny Tillotson
  4. Christmas Is The Time To Say 'I Love You' - Billy Squier
  5. Deck The Halls - The Mike Sammes Singers
  6. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen - The Mike Sammes Singers
  7. Hang Your Wishes On The Tree - Les Baxter Orchestra & Chorus
  8. Here Comes Santa Claus - The Mills Brothers
  9. Jing-A-Ling-A-Ling - Wayne King and His Orchestra
  10. Little Stowaway On Santa's Sleigh - The Golden Orchestra Pops
  11. Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer - Tex Beneke, Ray Eberle And The Modernaires
  12. Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer - The Hiltonaires With The Tony Mansell Singers
